The Smile of the New Bishop of Eichstätt

Exactly one week ago, the new Bishop of Eichstätt (DE), Dr. Christian Würtz, was solemnly installed in the cathedral. We were allowed to be there live during the service in the side aisle. The photo was taken exactly at the moment before he left at the end through the portal - turning left from his point of view - and went out. For a brief moment I could see his face: there was a happy, relieved, and deeply smiling face! To receive a blessing together with this expression… is very touching!
No, such an office is not easy. And the storms that blow through all German-speaking dioceses turn everything upside down. And yet he smiles. Why? He knows he is not alone! With the historical breast shield, which he received from his predecessor, he knows himself connected with an incredible history! The roots of the siblings Willibald, Wunibald and the faith-filled St. Walburga reach back to the 8th century! The bishop’s staff is passed on to him.
But even more important are the inner experiences and sources that he has already opened up on his previous path, even if at 55 he is still young. He knows deep struggle and just as deep joy from the relationship with Christ. I may know this because we were also able to get to know him in Switzerland in Einsiedeln over some years! In a group of priests, theologians, women theologians, couples with children. Cooking and celebrating together, making music, hiking and praying. Learning from one another, listening! They were special years and meetings.
God blesses those who faithfully listen to His voice and are ready to learn! From now on I am convinced: important signals of renewal will go out from Eichstätt again! May he find many helpers!
