The smile of the new bishop of Eichstätt

We see a happy bishop wearing a mitre and carrying a crosier, blessing the faithful as he leaves the cathedral.

Exactly one week ago, the new bishop of Eichstätt (DE), Dr. Christian Würtz, was solemnly installed in the cathedral. We were allowed to be there live during the service in the side aisle. The photo was taken exactly at the moment before he went out through the portal at the end - turning left from his point of view. For a moment I could see his face: there was a happy, relieved, and deeply smiling face! Receiving a blessing together with that expression… is very moving! No, an office like this is not easy. And the storms blowing through all German-speaking dioceses turn everything upside down. And yet he smiles. Why? He knows he is not alone! With the historic breast shield that he received from his predecessor, he knows himself connected with an incredible history! The roots of the siblings Willibald, Wunibald and the faithful St. Walburga go back to the 8th century! The bishop's staff is being handed on to him. But even more important are the inner experiences and sources that he has opened up for himself on his long path. Also a deep struggle and just as much joy from the relationship with Christ. I am allowed to know this because we were also able to get to know him over several years in Switzerland in Einsiedeln! In a group of priests, women and men theologians, couples with children. Cooking and celebrating together, making music, hiking and praying. Learning from one another, listening! Those were special years and meetings. God blesses those who faithfully hear His voice and are willing to learn! From now on I am convinced: important signals of renewal will come from Eichstätt! May he find many helpers!
